Nerja Caves
Nerja Spain is probably most famous for its caves which lie some 6km inland. Discovered in 1959 by some boys chasing bats they discovered the entrance to a huge system of limestone caverns. The Nerja caves are protected and have been well preserved with many parts still closed to the public including areas with prehistoric paintings of animals & humans figures. It is estimated that the caves were inhabited between 20,000 BC and 1,800 BC.
Visitors to the Nerja Caves are treated to a series of well lit chambers & displays of archeological finds. Of interest are the Hallof Bethlehem which is full of stalactites and stalagmites. The Hall of the Waterfall, which is the scene for the Festival of the Caves held in July.
And the Hall of the Cataclysm, whose fallen rocks indicate an earthquake long ago, the centre piece in the Hall of Cataclysm is the central column, formed when a stalactite and stalagmite met and joined after thousands of years of growth. It is the tallest of its kind in the world at some 32 metres.

El Salvador Church
This church was finished in 1697 during the ministry of Alonso de Molina Durán as parish priest. In 1776, following the purchase of three adjacent houses, the church was enlarged according to master builder, Juan Lechuga's plans.
The El Salvador Church has three naves with square supports and round vaults. The transept juts out from the lateral naves. It's building method follows the construction system, fruit of a tradition which continues until the Gothic period, yet with a greater variety of architectural solutions and monumental feel, both which are characteristic of Baroque architecture. Its roof truss lends it a somewhat Mudejar air, together with the remains of the original tow Inside is a mural by the master of new European figurative art, Francisco Hernández Días, which shows the Annunciation, set on one of Nerja's beaches.
Surrounding the present parish church are the sites of its predecessors, all of which have always been in the same area. It has had different patrons: first, San Juan (1505); then San Vicente Ferrer (1606). The chapel of the Castle (Torre de las Guardas at Balcón de Europa) was also prepared to serve as parish church (1668). The First parish priest was Francisco Ponce.
Balcón de Europa
In its historic centre, which dates back to 1487, we find the famous 'Balcón de Europa'. With two ancient cannons who form a reminder that until 1812 there was a fortress at the top of the cliffs. However it is now home to a panoramic restaurant which offer beautiful views over the Mediterranean and surrounding Sierra Almijara mountain range.

El Acueducto del Aguila
Still in perfect condition, El Acueducto del Aguila (The Eagle Aquaduct) is located on the Barranco de la Coladilla or the Cazadores de Maro (Nerja) cliff, close to the N-340 main road. Some maintain that this is the most

beautiful aquaduct constructed during the XIX century. Built built to carry water to the mills of the old San Joaquín sugar factory in Maro, the aquaduct comprises four levels of superimposed brick arcades with 38 arches and also features entrance templets on the top storey and a central templet with an inscription reading "Pura y Limpia Concepción" (Pure and Clean Conception"). You can enjoy pleasant walks with stunning views from the Tower of Maro.
This old aquaduct is to be found at Maro which is only a few miles from Nerja.
