Nerja is a beautiful Spanish resort, second to none with its own special atmosphere and culture. The village is set in a spectacular setting, to the east the Sierra Almijara mountain range and the Mediterranean to the front that basks in almost constant sunshine. Thankfully Nerja has managed to avoid the worst effects of unrestrained expansion and highrise hotels which has been the inevitable result of the tourist boom in some of the coastal resorts along the Costa Del Sol.
The old quarter of the town is still virtually unchanged with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces overflowing with flowers. Nerja Spain boasts 16 kilometers of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water. Including the internationally famous Burriana beach and the small coves below the impressive cliffs of Maro, which have been the inspiration of numerous artists who have set up residence here.
With its warm climate, you can enjoy yourself to the full all year round and take advantage of the relaxed way of life of a village that still retains much of the character of its Moorish past.
However, the heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, the "Balcony of Europe", a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below.
To the side of the Balcón, you will find the 17th Century El Salvador Church, constructed in baroque-mudejar style. You may also visit the 16th Century Nuestra Señora de las Angustias Hermitage with its paintings by the master Alonso Cano.
In the old quarter of town, typical small shops offer local craftworks and products of the area, including sweet wine and olive oil, honey and tropical fruits.
Lovers of the nature can enjoy the wonderful countryside in the area, camping at the campsite or in the camping zone in the parkland. For those who seek alternative activities on their holidays, there is fishing, diving, water-skiing, canoeing, water bikes, hiking, cycling, horse riding, jeep safaris, paragliding and much more.
At the beach you will find fantastic fish restaurants where you can enjoy the “pescaito frito” (fried fish), whilst the many international restaurants in town offer a wide variety of menus to suit all tastes.
With Nerja you do not have to travel far to discover the more tradition side of Spain. Nerja is situated in the province of Andalusia, home of flamenco dancing; bullfights, orange groves, castles and sleepy villages perched on the slopes of the skiing resort of Sierra Nevada.
