Nerja Vive La Difference !

Nerja is not your normal traditional tourist destination on the Costa Del Sol; whilst Torremolinos was being built up in the sixties Nerja slumbered away, peaceful and undisturbed. Even when Spain joined the common market in the late 1980’s Nerja had not really been “discovered” by the tourist. The adventurous drove to “Las Cuevas de Nerja”, the caves, and when they came back they moaned about the “cloches” that “littered” the sides of the roads.

To Spaniards the “Costa Del Sol”, is the area of Southern that stretches from Tarifa in the West to Nerja in the East. However, in reality the Costa Del Sol for the British and the Irish meant Benalmádena and Torremolinos, where pints of beer, bangers and mash and tea like mum used to make used to prevail! Nerja just did not fill the bill, a fact for which the Nerja aficionados can be eternally grateful. It was only on the map at all because two boys fell down a hole in 1959 and discovered the caves.

To a degree, Nerja Spain to its credit is still a backwater; the local council have had the foresight to ban tall hotels. All new buildings in Nerja blend in with the environment without the blight of skyscrapers blocking out the skyline making it very commercialised. It has evaded the slightly tatty look of the rest of the Costa’s in the eighties; it has grown sedately and retained much of its charm and character it perches loftily on high and gently offers its panoramic views of the Mediterranean. In short, it is one of the few places on the Costa where the local council have not managed to create a concrete jungle.

The public transport system in Spain is excellent, the services are good quick and cheap. A number of holiday makers want to experience the “thrill” of standing at a bus stop, whilst they are on holiday, simply because the would never in a million years dream of doing it at home - the idea of exploring Spain in a rental car is an anathema. Nerja is a holiday destination, which offers fantastic holiday opportunities, the number and type is almost endless. It is a great place for a beach holiday with short exploratory day trips to picturesque villages, nestled on the side of the mountain, with an azure sea glistening invitingly below.

Whilst much of local Spain can be explored, adequately using public transport. Andalucía also offers a bigger picture and for that, you need to drive. Frigiliana only ten minutes away is a lovely village that is famous for its steep streets, its strong wine and spectacular views. However, it can get crowded. it is difficult to park and it is easier and less stressful to get the bus when coming from Nerja.

One of the reasons that Nerja is so popular it is unspoilt, and that is a positive point, but conversely it does not offer cheap easy transport from an excursion point of view. Many visitors choose to drive and explore rather than use other options. Car hire in Andalucía is cheap and easy and plentiful except in August when the Southern Costa Del gets a million visitors, some of whom have pre-booked there car hire and leaving it until the last minute is an accident waiting to happen!
